Sail Melbourne: Important Information for Club Members
Final planning for Sail Melbourne has been completed and we wish to update all our members about the regatta.
Firstly, we have 290+ boats coming, including 11 nations represented and teams from all Australian states. With the large number of competitors, clearly the regatta is going to be a spectacular success.
The event shall involve a large number of volunteers from Brighton and many other partner clubs to provide racing across 4 course, held over 5 days. This year many RBYC members will be competing, including the clubs fleet of Etchells, headed by member John Bertrand AO.
With such a large contingent, the club will be stretched in terms of OTB yard storage, on water resources, club parking and other facilities such as catering, changing rooms. All will be extremely busy.
This means most club onwater activities have been curtailed:
1) Discover Sailing Courses – cancelled
2) OTB racers expected to enter SM if they wanted to race
3) The Etchells negotiated to be part of SM and have rounded up the required number
4) The Dragons will “go for a sail”
5) The keelboat pursuit race moved to RMYS
6) Brighton Championships will have a long passage race to remove themselves from the SM race area.
7) First Friday Lunch moved to the Second Friday.
In light of all the above, we ask for your understanding , cooperation and support, to ensure the event is a great success.
If you would like to assist with Sail Melbourne as a volunteer, please contact Dom at [email protected].
As well as the Sail Melbourne regatta (29th Nov-3rd Dec), The whole Australian Sailing Team, including most Rio Olympic competitors and champions, and other international teams, will arrive earlier and be training in the week before the regatta. During this period, club parking, dinghy storage, hardstand access and other club facilities will be restricted. In particular, member parking is not available from Monday November 27 until Monday December 4. Pick up/drop off access is available, at the discretion of the Sailing and Marina office, but extremely limited.
Again we ask for your support and cooperation during this spectacular event. Please contact the Sailing and Marina office if you have any questions.
