National Kiteboarding League Tour comes to Brighton in January

The Classic Holidays National Kiteboarding League (NKL) is set to make a big return in 2016 for its second year with bigger airs, bigger prize money and bigger opportunities.

With a $10,000 prize pool up for grabs, the 6-Round NKL Series will head across the country between November 2016 and February 2017 in search of Australia and New Zealand’s best male and female kiteboarders.

Commencing with Round 1 on the Gold Coast on 18 November, the series will then travel to Perth, Christchurch, Sydney and Melbourne before returning to the Gold Coast for the Grand Final in February.

In a big move for the competition, kiteboarders will be able to enter as many events as they like – rather than only entering their home state’s round – providing the opportunity to rack up more points for their personal ranking, with the top riders invited to participate in the Grand Final on the Gold Coast in February 2017.

Due to its success last season, the high-octane ‘Big Air’ intermission contest will also have its own category in the 2016/17 season, promising heart pumping action as kiters showcase their most impressive moves from the skies above.

Also new to the 2016/17 season, the Royal Brighton Yacht Club will play host to the inaugural KiteFoil and Twin Tip race during the Melbourne round in January 2017. Foil boarding is fast becoming the latest craze to hit the watersport world, and its inclusion in the 2018 Youth Olympics is expected to catapult this exciting form of the sport to new heights.

The popular ‘Have a Go’ sessions will also make a return during the NKL season, giving newcomers of all ages the opportunity to try the sport for free under the watchful eye of Australia’s top kiteboarders.

And the country’s most aspiring kiteboarders will have the chance to learn from one of the best – with champion kiteboarder Dan Sweeney offering exclusive NKL Coaching Clinics to participants in each of the cities hosting an NKL round.

President of Kiteboarding Queensland & Northern Territory Inc. (KBQNT) and NKL Event Director, David De Witt, said the event series will return in the new season in full force, again supported by Australasian holiday management company, Classic Holidays.

“The Classic Holidays NKL is not just about finding the kiteboarding talent that we know is out there across Australia and New Zealand, but showcasing what an exciting spectator sport kiteboarding is,” he said.

“The National series is back in full force this season with some exciting new changes that will make the event even bigger and better for all.”
Ramy Filo, CEO of Classic Holidays, said he is thrilled to see the return of the NKL series and all it brings to the wider community.

“The National Kiteboarding League is a fantastic way to involve not only our Classic Holidays members, but also the general public, in this fun and exciting sport,” he said.

“We’re thrilled with the new additions to the event this year, which will no doubt be a great draw card for people on holidays or in their local town to get along to experience kiteboarding in action at the NKL.”

The Classic Holidays NKL is proudly sponsored by Classic Holidays and Kiteboarding Australia, and supported by industry sponsors Ozone, Cabrinha, North and Axis, and exclusive car hire partner, RedSpot.
