Womens ENEWS

There was a real buzz around the club over the weekend of May 23-24 with the sailing of the inaugural Lady Skippers Short Course Series. With the exponential increase in the number of women participating in racing activities over the last few years, the short course series was created to provide increased opportunities for women to step up to skippering for the weekend.

Saturday dawned with flat seas and light winds and saw 22 boats on the water, with 3 boats from visiting clubs. After a brief postponement, the lady skippers and their supporting crew were away and racing in gentle southerly sailing conditions for the two scheduled races. Sunday ramped up with gusty northerly winds to 20-25knots, providing plenty of on water action for Race 3 of the series which also included the Associates Cup for RBYC skippers.

A fabulous weekend of sailing with a great mix of camaraderie and competition on the water saw Kate Clarke steering the Sydney 38 Audacious to victory for the series.

Kate’s will be the first name on the beautifully crafted perpetual trophy from Gino at G Gallery commissioned for the event. Congratulations to Kate and her well polished crew for an excellent performance.

Visiting boat Mr Bojangles from Hastings Yacht Club skippered by Pauline Cleaver and crewed by students from Chisholm TAFE placed second , with Rogue Trader skippered by Louise LeFevre in third place.

In the Associates Cup race, Sally Williams, the current title holder from 2008, successfully defended her title skippering Adams Rib to victory once again, closely followed by Jan Bedlington on Under Capricorn and Mary Alice Tedstone steering Ingenue to third place.

A fantastic weekend was had by all participants. Thanks to everyone for getting behind this event and making it such a success: the generous and trusting boat owners, the supporting crews, sailing committee, our excellent race management and our fantastic sponsors.

We look forward to seeing you all on the water again next year for an even bigger event.

Next Womens event is the Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta held at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, see News Item below for details
