Blanck misses out on medal
Tuesday 19th August 2008, with light and changeable winds and before a packed crowd, Sarah Blanck unfortunately missed out on an Olympic medal.
Sarah went into the race with the Chinese competitor Xu Lijia in 3rd place and 10 points ahead. In the double points, no drop race, Sarah needed to put 4 boats between Xu and herself. Xu kept a tight cover on Sarah who managed to escape and at one point was in 2nd place in the race and had one other boat between herself and Xu. Unfortunately a windshift that helped her into 2nd place also meant that the run to the line was pretty much a soildier's course. The race ended up with Xu claiming the Bronze medal and Sarah finishing 4th overall. After being well out of contention early in the regatta, Sarah fought hard to the end, giving Xu a good scare in the medal race.
Conditions in Qingdao have been very, very tough for all competitors and have thrown up some surprise winners and losers. In these tough and fickle conditions, Blanck's disppointment was matched by Tom Slingsby from the NSW Central Coast who as gold medal favourite and ranked the No.1 Lasor sailor in the world didn't have one top ten finish in any race, and in fact all but two of his races he finished in the 20s - a tough place to sail for even the best.
Gold Medal was won by USA - Anna Turncliffe
Silver Medal was won by Lithuania - Gintare Volungeviciute
Congratulations Sarah!!! RBYC are very proud to have been able to support you in your Olympic campaign.

HAVE YOU SEEN???
Dear Members On Tuesday 19th August 2008 a yellow Mazda was parked in the downstairs car park, as many of you may be aware this is the Sailing Administrators car. Unfortunately on this said day an anonymous bully involved the Mazda in a tragic accident of the worst kind, the car was hit and then left to expose its red underside. As the poor Mazda was left, wounds gaping and exposed to the elements the perpetrator fled the scene to station itself somewhere else in the car park. This blatant disregard for other persons' property has left members and staff aghast with disbelief that such injustice has been done or would be done in this 'Friendly and Trustworthy club'.
If you have been witness to or feel guilty of this heinous 'Hit and Run' crime please contact the office or Sarah directly, you may remain anonymous if you wish.
