Sail Melbourne @ RBYC

Exciting times are coming up at our Royal Brighton Yacht Club with the 2017 Sail Melbourne International Regatta only eight days away. Racing out of RBYC will start on Wednesday, 29 November 2017 with the Olympic classes and will conclude with the Invited Classes on Sunday, 3 December 2017.

You will see activities at the club in preparation for this world-class event ramp over the next week with the first competitors expected to arrive this coming week.

We are very proud to be hosting this high-calibre international sailing regatta, which is Australia’s premier Olympic and Invited Classes Regatta and a fixture on the Australian and World Sailing regatta calendar. Established in 1992 Sail Melbourne has become the largest annual ‘Off the Beach’ regatta in the southern hemisphere and is critical to the growth and success of our junior and youth sailors, enabling them to race alongside their Olympic heroes.

We are expecting over 300 competitors, ten overseas teams as well as the Australian Sailing Team and the Australian Sailing Youth Team in Brighton. The Australian Sailing Team is coming to RBYC with our Australian Rio 2016 Olympic medallists Tom Burton (Laser), Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (470) and Lisa Darmanin and Jason Waterhouse (Nacra 17). London 2012 Olympic champion and America’s cup sailor Tom Slingsby has entered the Finn Class, which will also include the current class world champion Max Salminen from Sweden.

The Australian Sailing Youth Team will be heading straight from Brighton to the Youth Sailing World Championships in China and both the Australian Sailing Team as well as the Australian Sailing Youth Team will train out of RBYC before and after the regatta.

The list of sailing legends heading to Brighton continues with Australia II America’s Cup winner John Bertrand AO competing in the Etchells and a number of our club members including Peter Coleman and Glenn Norton lining up against him.

On Friday, 1st December 2017 we will be hosting a “Behind the scenes of the 35th Amercia’s Cup” with our Australian Chief Umpire Richard Slater. The event is currently scheduled for 1730 (approximately one hour after racing) in the Bayview Room and everyone is invited to attend. Richard will be joined by Australian Sailing Team’s Olympians and America’s Cup sailors Jake Lilley (Artemis Racing) and Jason Waterhouse (Softbank Japan).

On Sunday, 3 December 2017 we will also host a Discover Sailing Event with Sail Melbourne International providing the perfect backdrop to showcase everything our sport has to offer.

We are looking forward to seeing you all down at the club supporting the event and cheering on our sailors from all around Australia and the world.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and understanding for all the activities at our club while we are getting ready to host this prestigious sailing event.
