HMAS Goorangai Memorial Trophy Race – 11 November

November 11th is the HMAS Goorangai Race Commemorating the tragic sinking of HMAS Goorangai with the loss of all 24 crew on 20th November 1940.

A Brief History

A former Club member, Les Nangle, was a Petty Officer in the RANVR prior to the War and was called up, served in HMAS Goorangai and left her just before her last voyage. Many of his mates were on HMAS Goorangai and it was to preserve their memory that he presented the Goorangai Trophy to the Club.

Race Information

The Race is from Brighton to Queenscliff and is conducted by the Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club with  the assistance of Royal Brighton Yacht Club and is open to all keelboats on the register of an affiliated Club. Race is scheduled to start at 0930 from RBYC Tower. Wharfage is free to competitors at RBYC and QCYC on the respective dates. Sunday , November 12th is QCYC’s 55th Opening Day and competitors are invited to stay and attend the Opening Ceremony, Blessing of the Fleet and luncheon.
