RBYC Opening Day – Photos and Wrap Up

For the First time in a number of years, the weather gods delivered some spectacular weather on the first day of the 2017-18 sailing season.

Events kicked off with the official ceremony at 10am with a number of club officials, distingusished guests and members of all ages, to hear the commodores opening remarks, Reverend Jon Chamberlain bless the fleet and Luitenant Commander Lesliegh Mather declare the new season had officially begun. Everyone then headed down to the new area on the rigging lawn and the new flagmast for the unfurlling of the club Burgee.

Once formal proceedings had completed everyone made a quick wardrobe change into their tropical gear and headed out for the sail past and opening all in pursuit race. A sizable fleet sailed past the flagship for the day It’s a Privilege, with Commodore Jackson and Vice Commodore Pascoe armed and ready (picture below). Three hearty cheers were heard from each boat as they passed with three more returned, before the all out water war commenced. Vice Commodore was quoted saying “I’ll need to wear my wet gear next year, there will be payback”.

The all in pursuit race provided a different competitive experience than normal for both the keelboats and OTB participants. It was a fun race sailed in great spirits with the winners announced later in the night.

After racing the crews came back to the club to a tropical party atmosphere, with decorations, drink specials, kids and adult activities and live entertainment. Presentations were held out on the deck and the parting continued into the night. The winners of the days awards were:
