F16 World Championships to be held at RBYC in 2018

Monday 22 August 2016

Thomas Koenig, Chairman of the Formula 16 Class Association, has today advised that Royal Brighton Yacht Club’s bid to host the 2018 F16 World Championships has been successful.

The Formula 16 sport catamaran is World Sailing recognised 5m OTB catamaran with an asymmetric spinnaker. Its class rules setup is very similar to those of the Formula 18 class, enabling a number of designs to compete together. It can be sailed in two modes – two-person with a jib, and single-person without a jib.

The F16 Worlds are expected to attract 50-60 boats from the Viper, Taipan and Mosquito classes, along with a variety of other designs

Royal Brighton Yacht Club was regarded as a superior venue for this important event due to:
• The club’s experienced event management and race management team
• Excellent sailing conditions in January on Northern Port Phillip with race areas close to club
• Ample boat launching, storage and a modern clubhouse with outstanding social facilities

The removal of the slipway and renovation of the yard now underway makes RBYC a strong contender to attract major “off the beach” championship regattas such as the F16 Worlds.
